How IoT can be used in Buildings, Some Ideas

Some ideas on how IoT can be used in buildings and help property management. (will keep update the list if found interesting ideas)

People counting sensor + thermostats sensor can be used to finetune AC distribution / lighting
and thus reduce energy use

People counting sensor can also help track how space/room is utilized in a building

Asset Tracking (e.g. RFID)
track furniture, how many chairs are in the meeting room right now?
with indoor positioning, navigate frontline technicians to inspect or repair an asset.

For shopping mall
Video analytics (Camera or People Counting Sensor without camera with higher privacy)
conversion rate analysis - how many ppl pass by, how many enter the shop, how many pick up the goods, how many actually buy
Map hotspot inside the shop area, re-layout to optimize the sales

Door contact
Ppl in disabled toilet over 30 minutes
Fire door opened more than 1 minute
-> send sms to property management staffs

PM2.5 sensor
If every buildings in Hong Kong has a PM2.5 sensor, we can map a micro block level air quality map and people can choose the route to travel with the cleanest air
We can also detect is anywhere air quality become unhealth and alert the stakeholder, i.e. people who will be in that area

Predictive Maintenance
Putting sensors on critical assets such as elevators, HVAC, collecting meters readings and determine health of the asset, some software/cloud service such as IBM Maximo can even tell when will the next failure for the asset using AI and machine learning.
