How AI can be used in building lifecycle

Design:

Tim Fu is a designer and founder of StudioTimFu, a high-tech architectural practice pioneering in computational design and AI, formerly from Zaha Hadid Architects. He collaborated with OpenAI's Sora to showcase Sora's potential for architecture. It renders realistic video walkthroughs of architectural spaces, with photorealistic interpretations of material expression, lighting and spatial quality.

Dami Lee, a Youtuber and Architect, discussed about if AI will replace human Architects in the future.

Vendors like Autodesk incorporate AI into their product to achieve something call Generative design or Parametric design, upon inputing some scoring criteria, the software can generate a number of design options for designer to further work on.

Building Department and Lands Department developed some AI plugin tool to automatically check building code compliance in the drawings and BIM models.

Construction:

DevB is promoting site safety software to be used in construction sites. They use AI in video analytics to track and monitor some safety metrics in the sites.

Robotics also help alot of work in construction site

Operations:

IBM has a product called Visual Inspection, users can train the system with their own images e.g. crack on the wall, and they will train the model to deploy to the robotics or drones for daily inspection and patrolling. When they sense any abnormality they can send alert and raise a service request in the backend facility management system.

HVAC/Chiller optimization using AI and IoT sensors to save 20-30% of eletricity cost.

Predictive maintenance using asset health data to predict asset failure and optimize maintenance resources.

Shopping mall operators also use AI analytics to track people flow and optimize the shop layout.

In summary, AI has been widely used in the building lifecycle spectrum, some are disruptive and evolving quickly, building professionals must adapt their existing skills to better utilize AI in their work.

Thanks.
